What are Anal glands?

Updated: Feb 5

Anal glands are scent glands that are located just inside the anus at 8 and 4 o’clock positions. Every time a dog defecates, a small amount of liquid from the anal gland is or “should” express onto the feces. For many dogs , these liquid-filled glands empty out every time defecation occurs but... for others, the glands could fail to empty and become impacted.

Wild animals are able to express their scent glands voluntarily, but “some” domesticated dogs have lost this ability. Have you ever asked your dog if he or she farted? You smelled something but didn’t hear anything ... FYI Sometimes when pets are startled or scared they will express their anal glands.

Yesterday I got asked... How smelly are they? I laughed just thinking about it... my answer was extremely strong malodorous fishy/rotten smell.

Now that you know what anal glands are. Next we will talk about the symptoms & the controversial question... to express or to not express?
